In addition to performing, Alan is also a veteran sign language interpreter having been in the field for 25 years. Abababa has also been affiliated with the CODA International (Children of Deaf Adults) organization for more than 17 years and in that time has lectured nationally and offered several CODA/KODA/Interpreting related workshops. Alan is pleased to now make these workshops available to the general public in addition to his performances.

For Interpreters

Interpreting's Most Outrageous Moments: "An Ethical Study"

In 25 years of freelance interpreting, Alan has experienced almost every conceivable interpreting scenario. In this extremely interactive and highly enjoyable workshop, Abababa relates real-life interpreting scenarios and invites group and individual discussion about the ethical implications, and where personal/moral codes can sometimes blur the lines of professionalism.

For KODAs

"Mommy Daddy, Deaf"

What does it mean to have Deaf parents? What does it mean to have hearing children? How do we as children reconcile this cultural divide within our families, and how do we as parents help our kids celebrate it? Through role playing, artistic expression and family oriented, Deaf/Koda themed games, Abababa takes families on a journey of discovery, building cultural pride and understanding.

For CODAs

"Where Do I Belong?"

There is no doubt that many codas struggle with personal identity. "I am hearing, but my soul is Deaf." Often misunderstood by the hearing world and sometimes doubted by the Deaf, coda's struggle with our sense of "belonging" influences many aspects of our lives. This interactive workshop examines our self-perceptions and offers new ways to "connect" and feel accepted.

"HAPPEN!" An ASL/English Storytelling Adventure"

Storytelling is an age-old art form. Storytelling in ASL can be more vivid and captivating than the best book or movie. Storytelling utilizing the spoken word, sign language and theatrics is an unbeatable combination and this workshop brings together all three for a can't-be-beat opportunity to improve your expressive skills in any form!
